Calluses are areas of thick, hardened, dead skin that form to protect the skin and structures from friction, pressure and injury. Calluses commonly form on the hands and feet. Active people usually have a small amount of callus on hands and feet as this is quite normal. Calluses might appear yellowish or grey in colour, feel hard and are less sensitive to the touch than surrounding skin. As they grow in diameter and depth calluses cause discomfort and need to be removed. Treatment requires the removal of the cause ie. Pressure or friction of wearing badly fitting footwear, followed by the reduction of the callus then off-loading of pressure using protective padding to cushion the area. The callus could also be softened and the dead skin removed by pain free debridement.
